Fear and Ignorance…

… can kill.

I’ll make no secret of it, I’m angry today. Fuming mad, in fact.

Yesterday, Kishan left a comment on my 2012 page. It reads:

I was watching a show on Discover and it showed how we are going to hit a apocolypse in 2012, and there’s people coming out with books and what not, and how 2012 is going to be a negative change, i heard how maybe 2012 will be a postive change. What worries me is that i am a teacher and my 3rd graders are hearing about this, and a little child is talking about how if its ending, that she should just end it now. This isnt even close to funny anymore

I agree. This isn’t even close to funny. A 3rd grader “is talking about how if its ending, that she should just end it now.”

Every one of you 2012 proponents, this is your fault.

You are doing this to our kids! You are filling their heads with unreasonable fears, with pseudo-science, with your doomsday crap! History Channel, Discovery Channel, any media outlet that airs these ridiculous pseudo-documentaries, this is your fault too!

Don’t you have an obligation to at least publish the truth if you’re going to call it a documentary? The dreck you’ve been serving up for years now is literally scaring people to death! Adults, at least, can (sometimes) sift through the crap and decide for themselves. An 8-year old, who sees a slick pseudo-documentary on one of your channels, does not have the critical thinking skills to do that!

You You-Tube’ers out there: Don’t you also have an obligation to the truth? How would you feel if you were the parent of a kid who kills themselves out of fear? What would you want from someone who peddled lies to your kid and pushed them over the edge to suicide? What would you like to do to them?

What would you like this teacher to do to you?

Personally, I hope someone finds you and sues you for everything you’ve got. In fact, I hereby volunteer to assist with any such prosecution. You District Attorneys out there, you parents, make a note. I will help you research the claims made by these irresponsible jerks, these fear-mongering, money-grubbing frauds. I will point you in the direction of reliable resources. I will help you dissect the claims made by these scam artists, and expose their lies.

I want them to go down.   Hard.

… And we’re back.

The two Yahoo! Answers posts deleted over the weekend have been restored.  So far the score is: 2012hoaxers – 0, AstroGeek – 5.

Once again, my 2012 page gets more publicity, the hoaxers lose more credibility (if that’s even possible), and perhaps another sockpuppet account, and I once again resolve to seek out every 2012 / Nibiru / Planet X question on Yahoo! Answers and post a reply to it.

Keep it up guys.  I don’t know about you, but I’m enjoying beating the snot out of you.

And again…

On Monday I told you about one of my answers on Yahoo! Answers Astronomy & Space being deleted.   Well, it appears that I am indeed the target of a campaign of censorship, because today I received this:

Hello AstroGeek <redacted>

Question: is the world really going to end in 2012?

Question Details: i heard that from 2 friends.

Deleted Answer: campbelp2002 is right, there is nothing to worry about. My daughter also hears this at school. The “2012 doomsday” is a hoax. It’s a fraud. It’s a con job. It’s a cruel and cynical lie being promoted by unscrupulous pseudo-scientific cranks who have a monetary interest: They want to sell their books, videos, ‘survival kits’, and spaces in non-existent shelters in Antarctica, and to divert attention from the fact that they have been wrong so many times before. It’s also being pushed by people who are promoting a Hollywood disaster movie due out later this year. All of the claims of ‘predictions’ by the Maya, the Aztecs, the Chinese (I Ching), Nostradamus, Sir Isaac Newton, Edgar Cayce, “Mother Shipton” are false: they did not make the claimed predictions. Predictions by others such as José Argüelles, Terrence McKenna, Nancy Leider, Mark Hazelwood and others are contrived pseudo-scientific nonsense. There is no “Planet X” or Nibiru. If someone claims that this object exists, then many regulars in this forum have been asking for the RA/Dec coordinates for it. If they can provide those coordinates and allow independent verification of its existence, then they can collect $5,000 from http://nibiruchallenge.blogspot.com. There will be no ‘pole shift’, either geographic or magnetic. There will be no ‘killer solar flares’. There is no ‘Photon Belt’. These events are fiction. There will be no ‘galactic alignment’ or ‘planetary alignment‘ of any kind, and we will not pass through the central plane of the galaxy, and even if these events were to occur, they would not cause any problems for us. As far as what is *really* going to happen: Olympic games in London Leap Year U.S. Presidential election Transit of Venus on June 6th Disclaimer: Due to the number of “2012” questions on Yahoo! Answers, this is a cut-and-paste answer. Please see my complete (long) opinion in the first link below. So, apparently I can answer questions as long as I don’t point people to this site.  Interesting…

What I take from this is that someone really doesn’t like my 2012 hoax page.   The only consolation I can take from this is that A) The answer generated an email to the question asker with my content in it and B) that when I appeal they will ‘lose influence in the community’.

Yes, I have appealed, and no, I haven’t heard anything about my appeal of Monday’s deletion.

They’ve done it again…

Seems like my answers on Yahoo! Answers Astronmy & Space are earning the ire of the 2012 hoaxers again… they’ve managed to get another one of my answers deleted.  I’m appealing, of course.

This time I was told that my answer was ‘solicitation’, which I’m guessing means that because I included a link to my “2012 hoax” page, that it was against the rules.   This is a bit incredible… Yahoo! Answers allows only a certain number of characters in their answers.  My 2012 hoax page is considerably longer than this limit.  I’ve referenced that page in literally hundreds of posts on Yahoo! Answers.  Now, if this stands, it appears that I can answer the “2012” question with a link to anything except my own site.

I’ll let you know what happens.

Constraints on Planet-X

As part of the smackdown of the great 2012 doomsday hoax Dr. Ian O’Neill over at AstroEngine.com has written an article asking the seminal question: Where is Planet X?  Where is Nemesis?

In it, he references a fascinating article by Lorenzo Iorio from the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Pisa, Italy who does the math in a paper titled Constraints on Planet X and Nemesis from Solar System’s inner dynamics, Lorenzo Iorio, 2009. arXiv:0904.1562v1 [gr-qc] and sets the minimum distances to objects of various masses based on the orbital dynamics of the inner solar system.   If these objects were closer then they would be causing detectable perturbations in the motions of the inner planets.

Iorio’s conclusions: A planet with the mass of Mars would be no closer than 62 AU.   A planet with the mass of Earth would be no closer than 430 AU.  A planet with the mass of Jupiter would be no closer than 886 AU.  An object with the mass of a brown dwarf (75-80 Jupiters) would be no closer than 3,736 to 3,817 AU (about 0.6 light years).   A red dwarf (0.075-0.5 solar masses) would be at least 3,793 to 7,139 AU  (or 0.6 to 0.11 light years).

This is yet another nail in the coffin of the 2012 hoaxers’ claims.  By this point the mass of iron nails exceeds the mass of the coffin by about 10:1.

UPDATE: Ian O’Neil has corrected some of the distances ( and I have reflected those corrections here).  Also, Ian cites another a paper by David Jewitt, at the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, which indicates that anything as big as Jupiter would be detectible out to 2140 AU.
